Strategies: Aiming for Success

Both providers and parents are vital in the success of children with special needs and disabilities in child care settings. Here are some strategies that will support the efforts of parents and providers to achieve a positive, healthy, and successful experience.

  • Learn the rules and policies of the child care program
  •  Ask for a written copy of the program's policies
  • Communicate openly and honestly.
  • Work to solve small problems before they become big ones.
  • Find time to speak with the provider daily about the child's ongoing progress.
  • Schedule meetings to discuss any issues that require full participation between you and the provider.
  • Routinely offer written updates about specific child needs.
  • Stay positive, offer to help, and maintain a sense of humor.
  • Find time to visit periodically for a more extended period of time. Observe a variety of activities, like lunch, outdoor play, and free play.


  • Make all program rules and policies clear and put them in writing.
  • Communicate openly and honestly through face-to-face, email, and phone calls.
  • Get special instructions in writing and clarify as needed.
  • Find time to speak with parents daily about the child's ongoing progress.
  • Schedule meetings to discuss any issues that are more involved.
  • Routinely request updates to ensure support strategies are relevant.
  • Stay positive and maintain a sense of humor.
  • Offer to help.
