Languages page

The “Languages” page of the informal assessment asks questions about the languages a participant can read, write, and speak. It collects information about the language the participant uses at home, English skills, whether there is a need for an interpreter, and any additional languages that the participant can speak.

Below, you can find information on the following topics related to the “Languages” page:

Home Language

The first question on the “Languages” page is "What language do you use at home?”. You will be required to select an option from a dropdown menu, including options that match the language list in CWW.

  • English displays at the top of the list, since this is likely to be the most common language selected.
  • At the bottom of the list, there is an “Other” option that can be used if the participant’s language is not included in the dropdown. If you select “Other”, be sure to record the language that the participant speaks in the “Notes” field at the bottom of the page – or in the “Details” field for “Do you need an interpreter?

Regardless of what language you select, you will be required to indicate whether the participant can “Read”, “Write”, and “Speak” the language by selecting “Yes” or “No” for each option.

English Skills / Interpreter Need

If you selected a language other than “English” for “What language do you use at home?”, you will be required to gather some additional information.

You will need to record the participant’s answer to “Which English skills do you have?” by selecting “Yes” or “No” for “Read”, “Write”, and “Speak”.

You will need to indicate whether the participant needs an interpreter.

Other Language Skills

Finally, you will have the opportunity to record any additional languages the participant knows. The question on the page reads “List any other languages you know:” with a dropdown where you can select a language that the participant speaks.

Results of any tests for ESL/ELL (English as a Second Language/English Language Learners) can be recording using the "Test Scores app", including BEST and TABE CLAS-E.

Notes

At the bottom of each page of the informal assessment, there is a “Notes” field. This is where you can record any additional information about “Languages” that you feel will be relevant for case management, including information that doesn’t directly relate to any of the questions asked earlier on the page. General information about the participant or family should still be captured using “PIN comments” or “Case Comments”.

Each time you visit the “Languages” page, you will see whatever information was entered in the “Notes” field the last time the page was saved.

  • If you see information that is no longer relevant, you can delete it or – if needed – replace it with new information. Previously saved “Notes” will still be accessible through the history for the "Languages" page.
  • If the information you see is still relevant, you can leave the existing text in the “Notes” field and – if needed – add additional information.

To get a sense of when “Notes” were originally entered and updated, you can access history for the "Languages" page via the "Informal Assessment Summary".

Help for Individuals with Read-only Access

If you have read-only access to WWP, you will able to see the response selected for each question on the "Informal Assessment Summary". However, in cases where the question included a list of options, it may be helpful to see the full list of choices.

On the “Languages” page, the only dropdown menu is the language list, which is used by the following questions:

  • What language do you use at home?
  • List any other languages you know:
