Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abuse Head Trauma (SBS/AHT) results from violent shaking or shaking and blunt impact of the head of an infant or small child. SBS and AHT have the potential to result in death or permanent neurological disabilities.

According to the National Center of Shaken Baby Syndrome

  • SBS/AHT is the leading cause of child abuse deaths in the U.S.
  • There are 1,300 cases of SBS/AHT a year in the U.S.
  • 80% of children suffer lifelong disabilities
  • 25% die from SBS/AHT

Abusive head trauma, which includes shaken baby syndrome, is preventable.

Wisconsin statutes and federal child care and development fund standards require regulated child care providers to complete abusive head trauma prevention training.

In Wisconsin, child care providers must complete a department-approved training in AHT prevention prior to working with children under age 5. Department-approved training includes information on:

  • Abusive Head Trauma (AHT)
  • Shaken Baby Syndrome (SBS)
  • The Period of PURPLE Crying®
  • Strategies and challenges of soothing a baby
  • Coping with frustration
  • Having a plan and educating others
