Most teens are not choosing to engage in these behaviors. What might look like a personal choice is most often not. In most cases, it is for survival. Many youth who are being trafficked do not see themselves as victims. They may not realize they are being trafficked. A child is anyone under the age of 18. Being trafficked can happen at any age. Anyone can be a trafficker.

All adults should learn the signs and risk factors of child sex trafficking.

Recent 2017 National data from the Polaris Project shows that the top risk factors for all human trafficking include recent migration/relocation, substance use, runaway/homeless youth, mental health concern, and involvement in the child welfare system. Top recruitment tactics reported in 2017 include intimate partner/marriage proposition, familial (a family member), posing as benefactor, job offer, and false promises/fraud.
