6. Exit Interview

At the end of the monitoring visit, the licensing specialist should offer to conduct an exit interview with the staff person(s) designated in charge of the program on the day of the visit. The exit interview can be a critical part of a visit since it offers an opportunity for the licensing specialist to explain what was observed and may also be a chance to offer technical assistance to aid the program in meeting any unmet rules. The licensing specialist can suggest that the program develop a plan for immediately correcting the violations, as well as a strategy to prevent each of the violations from reoccurring. S/he may suggest helpful resources currently used by licensed programs. However, public school program staff are not required to participate in an exit interview.

During the exit interview, the licensing specialist reviews and clarifies the results of the visit, and may share the total number and type of rules reviewed and the number of rules met at the time of the visit.

Unlike the requirement for licensed centers, a public school program is not required to submit a correction plan to BECR. However, the public school program may choose to submit a correction plan to BECR. Licensing specialists do not verify correction of the cited violations except as previously noted at the next annual monitoring visit.

If it has not already been done, the licensing specialist should also leave a business card that includes the licensing specialist’s contact information. The program can be encouraged to contact the licensing specialist with questions. Also, if requested, the licensing specialist must provide the name and contact information of the licensing specialist’s supervisor.

Documentation of the exit interview is not required but is considered good practice. The exit interview is documented in WISCCRS in the comments field under Site Visit. Documentation includes when the exit interview was conducted, who was present and any outstanding comments or questions that were noted at that time.
