Wisconsin Department of Children and Families - Division of Early Care and Education
Bureau of Early Care Regulation
Child Care Certification Policy Manual
SIDS training was incorporated into the department-approved entry level training, Introduction to the Child Care Profession, offered by department-approved agencies effective September 2001 and Principles of Child Care Certification June 2024. If an operator / provider completed the course after September 2001, or Principles course, they have met the SIDS training requirement. In these cases, a separate certificate of completion of SIDS training is not necessary, as long as the Introduction to the Child Care Profession completion postcard issued by the Wisconsin Registry (or transcript if the course was taken through a technical college) indicates that it was taken after September 2001 or the provider completed the Principles course.
Note: When entering the Introduction or Principles course in WISCCRS, the certification worker also will need to enter SIDS training separately, even if the Introduction to the Child Care Profession course was completed after September 2001. This is because the system is not programmed to determine whether or not the course also meets SIDS requirement, based on year it was completed.
If an individual has completed a credit-based course called “Health, Safety and Nutrition”, as part of an Associate Degree from a technical school, they have also met the SBS and SIDS training requirements. Although it is possible other credit-based courses may include SIDS and SBS, the school must issue a certificate of completion for SIDS/SBS or indicate this on the transcript, if the school offers this training in another credit-based course.
If an individual has completed a non-credit department approved course called Fundamentals of Infant and Toddler Care in December 2001 or later, they have met the SIDS training requirements. In this case, the SIDS training must also be entered separately.
SIDS training is also included in the high school Assistant Child Care Teacher (ACCT) course. See sections 3.4. and 4.4 for more information regarding the ACCT course.
See section 4 regarding department-approved entry level pre-service training. See section 6 regarding Wisconsin Registry postcards.
