Child Care Licensing Procedure Manual
Wis. Stat. ยง 48.658(4)(a) requires that when monitoring a center that provides transportation, the licensing specialist must inspect each vehicle that is required to have a child safety alarm to determine whether the child safety alarm is in good working order. All vehicles with a seating capacity of 6 or more passengers in addition to the driver, that are owned or leased by the child care provider or a contractor of the child care provider and used to transport children, must be equipped with a child safety alarm that prompts the driver to inspect the vehicle for children before exiting the child care vehicle.
The child safety alarm inspection must occur at least once per year and the determination of whether the rule is met or unmet must be made by direct observation. The rule cannot be marked as met or unmet based on a discussion of the rule with child care center staff or review of internal procedures or records.
All transportation rules included in the Annual Health and Safety Rule Tag must be reviewed on an annual basis when monitoring a center that provides transportation. This requirement is in addition to the annual child safety alarm inspection. See the Annual Health and Safety Rule Tag for more information on the specific annual requirement.
