7.1 When Other Agencies are Involved

Certain events reported to the BECR regional office may be within the jurisdiction or regulatory authority of a third party. Usually when a death occurs to a child in licensed care, other agencies, such as law enforcement or child protective services, are called upon to investigate the death. In situations in which other agencies are involved in the investigation, the licensing specialist will likely have to wait for the other agency’s findings before developing his/her own investigation plan. The licensing specialist should inform the licensing manager/licensing supervisor of such situations.

If a third party, such as law enforcement or child protective services, reports the death of a child to BECR, in addition to the incident report from the center, the death is investigated and recorded as a complaint. If the death becomes known through the incident report submitted by a center and no third party lodged a complaint related to the death, the licensing specialist follows the incident, accident, injury and death reporting procedures.
