5.4.2 Considering the Best Place to Gather Information

The licensing specialist must make decisions about where to go to gather information. This will often be self-evident. Physical evidence or center records may only be available at the center. Other documents may only be available from specific county agencies, courts, etc. Interviews present the licensing specialist with more to consider. For example, some interviews are best conducted in person at the center or in a parent’s home, others can be conducted by phone. The licensing specialist must take into consideration that staff interviews conducted at the center may provide different results than those conducted off the premises. Another thing to consider is that it is often more productive to interview a staff person after work rather than before, as they may be reluctant to disclose something immediately before facing their employer.
