8.2 - Open Records Law

DCF records are subject to the Wisconsin Public Records Law. Public records are also referred to as “open records.” Under the public records law, access to government records is presumed. Many of the Department’s records are open to the public, but there are exceptions to the presumption of access. Confidential records can only be released to persons authorized to access them according to statute. Some records may be released only after part of the record is redacted by the DCF Office of Legal Counsel (OLC). Questions about a record and whether it is confidential should be referred to the DCF OLC. All CBU records requests are forwarded to the CBU supervisor for review and assignment. Refer to DCF Policy 502 for further information on public records.
