Child Care Background Check Procedures
A background check conducted for the applicant, licensee, certified operator, employees and all household members includes a review of the following:
A national FBI criminal record search using fingerprints – initially and every five years thereafter;
A Department of Justice (DOJ) Criminal History Database check;
An Integrated Background Information System (IBIS) search (triggered by the DOJ Criminal History Database Check);
A National Sex Offender Registry website check for each individual’s name and the address of the center;
National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Sex Offender Registry check;
Child Protective Services findings in eWiSACWIS (adults and minors age 10 and older);
A name-based search in each state in which the individual has resided in the past five years of the state criminal repository, state SOR, state CAN registry;
The County Reference Letter if applicable;
Wisconsin Consolidated Court Automation Project (CCAP);
Depending on the unique circumstances of the application, the background check may also include:
Military discharge records;
Records from clerk of courts/tribal jurisdiction;
Law enforcement arrest records.
