2.9 Time Line for Response

The Wisconsin Open Records law requires that records be provided “as soon as practicable and without delay.” A reasonable time for response to any specific request depends on the nature of the request, the staff and other resources available to process the request, the extent of the request, and whether the records must be redacted of confidential material and other related considerations. Although the public records law does not require response within a specific time, records are, generally, made available by agencies within ten working days. In some cases, the requested records cannot reasonably be provided within the established agency time frame due to the magnitude of the request, the availability of staff, the inquiries or research that must be performed or other legitimate reasons.
