Wisconsin Works (W-2)
Discontinued Program -- TANF Literacy Grants
Beginning July 1, 2002, 16 organizations in Wisconsin received $750,000 in TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) literacy grants. Funds from these grants were used for services designed to improve the literacy skills of low-income parents and their children.
These grants expired in December of 2003 and funding was not continued.
These grants allowed local organizations to further develop or expand services to individuals with low-literacy or limited English proficiency skills. This investment helped provide the reading skills needed by many working families in order to further strengthen communities and the workforce.
The department selected 16 grant recipients from a field of 29 applicants. The grants were available to non-profit organizations that primarily provide adult literacy services. Programs funded by the grants included one-to-one tutoring services, small group services, workplace literacy or child and family literacy activities.
