Learner Support
Welcome to Online Learning!
This is your opportunity to
complete your training when it best fits into your
schedule and to take breaks when you want to, not when
the instructor says you can. You don’t have to leave
your desk to complete this training (though you may want
to so you can find a little privacy and quiet time for
concentration).
This page provides you with a net,
all the support services you need to successfully
participate in online learning, and to answer any
questions you may have related to distance learning.
Common Questions and Answers
When we think about distance learning, we want to know what we can expect. Below are common questions along with the answers. Simply click the links to learn more.
- What is online learning?
- What are the advantages?
- How is it delivered?
- What methods are used?
- What hardware and software do I need?
Assessments
Below are some assessments to assist you in getting ready for the online learning process. Completion of the Readiness for Distance Learning Assessment is highly recommended. Also, take advantage of the others as needed.
Readiness for Distance Learning
This assessment was developed by PTS to evaluate the
skills needed for distance learning as well as skills specific
to the types of online resources available through PTS. The
answers provide additional comments and resources related to
your work and needs in completing online learning
topics successfully.
Computer Skills Survey
This is a link to a computer skills survey
from Portland Community College. The survey asks basic questions
related to computer literacy and provides feedback and links to
appropriate tutorials.
Learning Styles Assessment
This site provides a questionnaire that aims
to find out your preferences for the way you
work with information. It assesses your preferred learning style
and your preference for the intake and output of ideas and
information. After completing the assessment, you will receive a
"report" with your preferred learning style and strategies to
use in the intake and output of information. You will also
receive study tips for your style.
Communication Styles
The Communication Styles
Assessment is a web page designed to help you gain knowledge of
your own personal communication styles and how they affect the
training process. After you complete this topic, you will
be able to describe your personal communication style and how it
impacts your new worker training process.

Try This for Fun - Internet Scavenger Hunt
The internet provides many, many resources useful to you in your work. Many of these resources are developed and provided by the Department of Workforce Development and the Department of Health and Family Services. Here is an activity for you to practice your skills in searching the internet as well as access available resources.
First, you may want to check out this brief introduction to, and the searching of, the internet.
Supervisors Resources
A section of the PTS website is devoted to supervisors. It provides links to sections of the website that are useful for supervisors.
Stressed Out? Had Enough? Take a Break!
It is recommended when participating in distance learning that you take regular breaks. Do not sit in front of the computer for hours at a time. Your retention will diminish, as will your interest in the topic. In addition, you risk giving yourself a big headache...
So, the following links are provided for your enjoyment and for your break times.
