new worker training
Welcome to New Worker Training!
This page outlines the DCF New Worker Training process from beginning to end.
New Worker Training (NWT) is required for all new W-2 Financial and Employment Planners (FEPs), Resource Specialists (RSs), W-2 Case Managers (CMs), Child Care Eligibility, and CSAW. NWT curriculums are available through the PTS Learning Center for each of these job functions. New workers are required by DWD 17 to complete initial NWT within 6 months of hire date with the agency. Each job function completes a NWT track appropriate to the specific job duties. Note that a W-2 FEP who also performs the RS and/or CM function completes only the FEP NWT curriculum.
To get started in NWT, complete the Registration Profile available on the homepage of teh PTS Learning Center
To view a list of courses within a curriculum, access the New Worker Training Guides found in the Supervisor Tools section of the PTS Learning Center
Email PTSTrainingSupp@wisconsin.gov with any questions regarding this process.
How To Access NWT
The first step is to access the Registration Profile to request the appropriate curriculum for your job function. Get the Registration Profile from the homepage of the PTS Learning Center. All registration is done through the Learning Center. The completion of each topic and of the prerequisites will be tracked automatically.
Getting Started In New Worker Training
There are a few things you need to do to prepare for New Worker Training. These include:
- Completing a
Registration
Profile identifying your job function and
job duties. Complete this form and submit it as instructed. Accurate completion is
essential because your personal curriculum will be based on this
form.
- Complete all fields.
- Be sure to check the correct New Worker Training curriculum(s) based on the new worker’s job function. Instructions and examples are provided in the Registration Profile.
- Request systems access through Security.
- At a minimum, request CARES Worker Web and Mainframe access and access to the DWD Workweb (DWD Extranet). The needed forms are on the DWD Extranet at http://workweb.dwd.state.wi.us/. Note that you need a logonID and password to access this site.
- Ensure that the new worker’s workstation is prepared for New Worker Training. The tools to access all of the New Worker Training materials are available on the Distance Learning Tools page. Talk to your IT staff if needed to download these tools.
- Review the Roles, Responsibilities, and Requirements for new and experienced workers.
- Go to the Learning Center for additional instructions and information related to New Worker Training. Within the Learning Center, these can be found in:

Initial TANF/W-2 New Worker Training
Once you have completed the preparation steps and you are entered into the Learning Center, you can begin your initial New Worker Training. Follow these steps to get started. Note that once started, New Worker Training should be completed within 5-9 weeks. Refer to the NWT Guide and Syllabus/Sample Calendar for your job function for more specific information. These are located in the PTS Learning Center under Supervisor Tools.
- Access the PTS Learning Center and click on the "My Information" link to access your New Worker Training curriculums. Curriculums are based on the job functions reported on the Registration Profile. There may be more than one curriculum listed. For example, if you perform eligibility for FS, MA, and W-2, you will have two curriculums, one for FS/MA and one for W-2. You only need to complete each topic once, even if there are duplicates between your curriculums. The Learning Center will record each completion and you can move on to the next course.
- Complete all of the required training courses. Access the Curriculum Map to see all the available courses.
- Upon completion, access the Initial New Worker Training Course Completion page and request your Certificate of Completion
Once you have completed all required courses as listed in your curriculum(s), you will receive a certificate of completion from the Partner Training Section related to your completed TANF curriculum(s).
TANF/W-2 New Worker Training Enhanced Case Management
Additional courses are required for all TANF workers. For W-2 workers, these are in a NWT Enhanced Case Management curriculum and may include (depending on job function):
- Balancing Domestic Abuse Issues and W-2 Participation or Domestic Abuse Awareness Day
- W-2 Case Management: Assessment, Employability Plans, and Activity Assignment
- W-2 Case Management: Achieving Balance for Customer Success
Curriculum Assignment
Curriculums are assigned by PTS staff. The Introductory curriculum is assigned based on job function reported on the New Worker Profile. All subsequent NWT curriculums are assigned when a the prerequisite curriculum is complete. Completion requires finishing all components of each course within a curriculum and approval from PTS staff.
For Child Care Eligibility and CSAW, the required courses are Introduction to Civil Rights and Introduction to ADA. These will be added to your profile at the same time as the NWT curriculum is added. Completion is required within 12 months of hire date.
