Re: 2005 Wisconsin Act 5, Regarding Juvenile Sex Offenders

Governor Doyle recently signed 2005 Wisconsin Act 5 into law. A brief description of the new law is provided and a copy is attached.

2005 Wisconsin Act 5 authorizes a police chief or sheriff to provide information from the Sex Offender Registry concerning a registrant who is a child or a registrant who entered the registry as a result of a juvenile proceeding in which the registrant was adjudicated. Information may be released to an organization, including schools, day care providers, and some government agencies, an individual, or the general public if the police chief or sheriff determines that doing so is necessary to protect the public. Act 5 applies to both persons who were on the Sex Offender Registry before the Act's effective date and those who are placed on the Registry after that date.

Effective Date: This law became effective on May 17, 2005.
