Independent Living for
Children in Out-of-Home Care

Role of Department

Department of Children and Families staff develop and issue policies and procedures for the use of the funds, provide technical assistance and consultation on the development of program and evaluation practices, and issue and monitor contracts to counties, tribes and the Department of Corrections/Division of Juvenile Corrections. Approximately 350 youth leave care every year because they turned age 18. In addition, about 4,000 youth currently in or exiting care are eligible to receive services at any time. Under the current federal law, Wisconsin will receive approximately $1.9 million for independent living services and $660,000 for Education and Training Voucher Program services annually to provide services to these youth.
