More Questions Asked by Parents Getting Support

Can my child support agency help if the other parent moves to another state or another country?
Yes. See the information about working with other states and countries.

Can my child support agency help with medical support the court ordered?
Yes. Please see the information for medical support.

How can I get a statement of all the support I received last year?
You can view and print your payment history from the Child Support Online Services site (registration required). You can pick a statement for one or for all of your cases. You can also pick the timeframe:

  • the past 90 days
  • year-to-date
  • past calendar year

You may also call the KIDS Information Line, weekdays, from 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, and ask to have a payment history mailed to you.

I moved a few years ago, but did not tell my child support agency. I heard the other parent paid some support during that time. Can I check to see if I have support coming?
Yes, you can go to the Unclaimed Child Support page to see if support is being held for you. This page has links to forms you will need to file in order to claim any support being held.

I was holding on to support checks in case of an emergency. Now my bank said the checks are too old to cash. What can I do?
These checks are now "stale-dated." We will replace checks dated less than six years ago. You should download the Request for Re-Issuance of a Stale-Dated Check form. Follow the instructions about filing this form. You need to sign the form in front of a Notary Public.

If the other parent pays support to two families, how much support will each family get?
Federal rules and state law dictate how support collections are paid out. Click here for detailed information about how support is paid out.

After my child support is paid, when will I get it?
In most cases, support is paid out within two days of receiving a payment. New income withholdings, the first payment on a new Visa debit card, and payments from tax returns take longer. Click here to see these timelines.

Can I use a private collection agency?
Yes. You may employ a private attorney, a private investigator, and/or a private collection agency to establish and enforce your child support order. You should inform your child support agency if you do so. All payments must still go through the Wisconsin Support Collections Trust Fund.

You, not the other parent, are responsible for all fees the collection agency charges.

The federal Office of Child Support Enforcement reports that, "private collection agency fee rates generally range from 25% to 33%. Depending on the contract, a private collection agency may collect fees on any amounts received, even if the money was collected as a result of the work of the state child support program or if the private collection agency received the money as current, rather than past-due support."
