Charging Interest on Past-Due Support
Wisconsin law requires us to charge 1% interest per month (12% per year) on past-due support. Interest charges begin when the past-due support equals or exceeds the amount due in one month.
Example:
- The support order is for $300/month
- The support amount owed is $500
- We charge interest on the $200 ($500 - $300)
We charge interest even if the parent is paying on the debt. We do not charge interest on unpaid birth costs or fees.
The interest charged on the amount of past-due support owed to a parent is owed to that parent. The interest charged on the amount of past-due support owed to the state is owed to the state.
