Child Support & the BadgerCare Plus program

Many single, separated, and divorced parents applying for the BadgerCare Plus program’s "Standard Plan" will be referred to a child support agency. Families in the Standard Plan pay very small, if any, co-pays and premiums for health services.

When referred to the Child Support program, parents will get full child support services and do not have to pay an application fee. Parents may have to pay some fees for support services they receive.

When parents are referred to child support, they must cooperate with the Child Support program.

If the parents are not married when the mother applies for BadgerCare Plus and the mother is referred to child support, the court may order the father to repay birth costs. Birth costs include health care costs related to the pregnancy, as well as the birth of the child.

If the family is not referred to the Child Support program:

  • the father will not have to repay birth costs to the BadgerCare Plus program
  • the family may apply for child support services (If the family is already getting full child support services, the family will continue to receive these services.)
